Esports tournaments to bet on, with confirmed dates

Valorant Champions runs in Shanghai until 18 October, League of Legends Worlds starts in the USA on 15 October and the PGL CS2 Major in Singapore follows from 25 November. Below are the 28 tournaments we cover, with dates only where the organiser or a reliable esports outlet confirms them.

Tournament betting is mostly outrights: a bet on the champion. The maths of a bracket makes even strong favourites long odds, and the guide below shows why.

Short answer

Which esports tournaments are best to bet on?

The majors of the biggest games: CS2 Majors, The International, League of Legends Worlds and Valorant Champions. They get the most bookmakers, the deepest markets and the most information on teams. Right now that means Valorant Champions (to 18 October), Worlds (15 October – 14 November) and the PGL Major Singapore (25 November – 13 December).

Patterns and exceptions

Why outright favourites pay more than you expect

60% per series

A good favourite through four rounds

What it means: a 60% favourite in each series wins a four-round bracket about one time in eight; fair odds are about 7.7.

Exception: a team that gets a bye or an easier side of the bracket plays fewer series, and its title chance is much higher.
75% per series

A dominant team through four rounds

What it means: even a team that wins three series in four is more likely to lose the tournament than to win it.

Exception: these figures assume the same chance in every round; opponents get stronger as the bracket narrows.

Computed as q^n: the chance to win each series raised to the number of series. Before bookmaker margin.

Formats

Tournament formats and what they do to the odds

Swiss stage
Teams with the same record meet each round until they reach a set number of wins or losses. So what: early BO1 rounds produce upsets; favourites rarely go out before the later rounds.
Double elimination
A team must lose twice to go out: once in the upper bracket, once in the lower. So what: a strong team that loses early can still win the event, so outright odds react less to one loss.
Single elimination
One loss and the team is out. So what: the bracket maths above applies in full; outrights on favourites carry more risk.
Group stage (GSL)
Groups of four with a winners' and an elimination match; two teams advance. So what: a group of death makes the outright on a strong team in it longer.
Grand final
The last series, often a BO5, sometimes with an upper-bracket advantage. So what: the longer format favours the stronger team more than earlier rounds did.
LAN
Played on site, offline, as opposed to online qualifiers. So what: online form does not always carry over to a stage and a crowd.

Esports tournament betting: FAQ

What is an outright bet on an esports tournament?

A bet on who wins the whole event, placed before it starts or while it runs. It settles only when the champion is known, so your stake is tied up for days or weeks.

Why are outright odds on favourites so long?

Because the favourite must win every playoff series. A team with a 60% chance in each of four knockout series wins the title about 13% of the time (0.6⁴), which is fair odds of about 7.7 before any margin.

Is the margin higher on outrights?

Usually, yes. A two-way match market might carry 5%, while an outright market with 16 teams often adds up to well over 100% in implied chances. Add 1 ÷ odds for every team to see it.
