In fantasy esports you pick a lineup of real players within a budget and score points from their in-game stats, such as kills, assists and objectives. Paid contests pay prizes to the best lineups, after the operator takes a fee (the rake).
This guide explains season-long and daily formats, works through an example score, and shows how the rake compares with a bookmaker's margin. Whether paid fantasy counts as gambling depends on where you live.
Short answer
You draft real pro players under a salary cap, earn points from their stats in real matches and compete against other entrants for a prize pool. Unlike a match bet, your result depends on individual stats across several matches, and the operator's fee comes out of the prize pool.
How it works
You draft a team for a split or a season, make transfers and score week by week. Usually free or low cost; closer to a hobby than a bet.
One slate of matches, e.g. one day of a LoL or CS2 event. You pick a lineup under a salary cap and the contest is settled the same day. Paid entries make it closer to betting.
Example rules: 3 points per kill, 2 per assist, −1 per death. A player with 7 kills, 5 assists and 3 deaths scores 21 + 10 − 3 = 28 points. Real rules differ by site and game.
Head-to-head (one opponent), double-up (top half doubles the entry) and guaranteed prize pools (many entrants, top-heavy prizes).

What it means: in this example a 10% rake means an average player gets back $9 per $10 entered, similar to a bookmaker margin of 10%.
