Short answer

How do you bet on The International?

Most bookmakers price TI three ways: the outright winner before and during the event, the winner of each series, and markets inside a game such as first blood, total kills or Roshan. Group and playoff series are mostly best-of-three and the grand final is best-of-five, so a stronger team is safer over a long series than in one game.

Outright vs match

Three ways to bet on TI

Outright winner

Pick the champion before or during the event. The bet settles when the final ends.

So what: higher payout, but the price carries the margin of every round and your stake is locked until the trophy is lifted.

Match winner

Pick the winner of one series. It settles when that series ends.

So what: usually the lowest margin on the page, and you can react to form, rosters and the draw.

Specials and props

Top region, total games in the grand final, first blood or first Roshan in a game, MVP-style player specials.

So what: thin markets with wider margins; compare the price on two or three sites before you bet.

Champion

Won title chance 100%

How it is worked out

Title chance = chance per series to the power of the series left. With 4 series to win: 13.0%, fair odds 7.72. Each series won removes one factor.

What it means: a pre-event outright price at 6.17 includes the margin on every round, so backing the same team series by series can pay more or less depending on the match margins you get.

TI playoffs are double elimination, so a team that loses once can still win the title by a longer route. The example follows the upper bracket and keeps every series at 60%.

Worked example, not a forecast. Book odds = fair odds ÷ (1 + overround).

Example odds, not live prices. The sum of implied probabilities shows the margin.

Team Example odds Implied Fair odds
Team Spirit 4.50 22.2% 5.83
Team Falcons 5.00 20.0% 6.48
Team Liquid 6.00 16.7% 7.78

Any other team 3.50 28.6% 4.54
Sum 129.6% margin 22.9%

Reading an outright market

Add up 1 ÷ odds for every team. Here it is 129.6%: the bookmaker keeps 22.9% of outright stakes on average.

What it means: outrights suit a strong view on one team. The names show how the table works; they are not predictions.

What changed

Since 2013 a share of Compendium and Battle Pass sales has gone into the prize pool. Battle Pass money set a new record every year up to 2021; after Valve dropped the Battle Pass in 2023, the pool fell to around $3M.

What it means for betting: prize money does not move the odds directly, but a smaller pool changes how many teams build their season around TI.
