Key points
-
65%
A team that wins 60% of maps wins about 64.8% of Bo3 series. Fair odds: 1.54.
-
5.3%
Example odds of 1.85 and 1.95 add up to 105.3% implied, so the bookmaker keeps about 5.3% on that market.
-
+1.5 maps
In a Bo3 the +1.5 map handicap wins if the underdog takes one map. It suits close matches with a clear favourite.

One fixture
Match bets settle within hours. Outright bets on a tournament winner tie your stake up for days or weeks.
What a single-match bet is
A single-match bet is a wager on one fixture between two teams or players: Team Vitality against Team Spirit in CS2, T1 against Gen.G in League of Legends. It settles when that series ends. Tournament or outright bets, in contrast, settle on who wins the whole event.
Most esports fixtures are played as a series of maps or games. The series length sets how much variance there is, and it changes the odds more than many bettors expect.
Series formats you will see
| Format | Wins needed | Where it is used | What it means for bets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bo1 | 1 map | Group stages, Swiss rounds, some leagues | Most upsets; prices closer to even |
| Bo3 | 2 maps | Most playoffs and league matches | Standard for map handicaps and totals |
| Bo5 | 3 maps | Grand finals, some playoffs | Strongest team wins most often |
The main single-match markets
- Match winner (moneyline): who wins the series. Some books offer a draw in formats that allow one, such as Bo2 group matches.
- Map handicap: a head start in maps. −1.5 in a Bo3 means the favourite must win 2–0; +1.5 means the underdog must win at least one map.
- Total maps: over or under 2.5 maps in a Bo3, a bet on whether the series goes the distance.
- Correct score: the exact series result, such as 2–1. Higher odds, lower hit rate.
- Map winner and in-map markets: who wins map 1, first blood, first to 10 kills, total rounds. These come down to the game and the bookmaker.
From map win rate to match price
If you can estimate how often a team wins a single map, you can work out its chance in any series length. With map win probability p and independent maps, a Bo3 is won with probability p²(3 − 2p) and a Bo5 with p³(10 − 15p + 6p²).
Series win chance and fair odds
A small map edge becomes a bigger series edge. A 55% map favourite is about 59% in a Bo5.
| Map win rate | Bo1 | Bo3 | Bo5 | Fair Bo3 odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 50.0% | 50.0% | 50.0% | 2.00 |
| 55% | 55.0% | 57.5% | 59.3% | 1.74 |
| 60% | 60.0% | 64.8% | 68.3% | 1.54 |
| 70% | 70.0% | 78.4% | 83.7% | 1.28 |
Calculated from the formulas above. Fair odds = 1 / probability, no margin.
Check the margin before you bet
Add the implied probabilities of both sides. With example odds of 1.85 and 1.95: 1 / 1.85 = 54.1% and 1 / 1.95 = 51.3%, a total of 105.3%. The 5.3% above 100 is the bookmaker's margin. A lower margin means more of every stake comes back to bettors over time, so comparing prices between sites is the simplest edge available.
What to research before a match bet
- Recent form against similar teams Results against top-20 opponents tell you more than wins against much weaker sides.
- Map pool and veto In CS2 and Valorant, work out which maps each team is likely to pick and ban. A team can be the underdog overall and the favourite on its own pick.
- Roster and stand-ins A missing player, a new signing or a stand-in changes a team's level more than a run of results suggests.
- Patch and meta In MOBAs especially, a new patch can favour certain playstyles. Teams adapt at different speeds.
- Stakes and schedule Elimination matches, travel, LAN versus online and back-to-back days all affect performance.
Live betting on a single match
Live (in-play) odds update after rounds, kills and objectives. Live markets let you react to what you see, for example a team that is clearly stronger on a map than expected. Bookmakers protect themselves with short bet delays and frequent market suspensions, and broadcast streams usually run behind the data bookmakers receive. Our guide to stream delay explains why that matters.
Single-match bets versus tournament bets
| Single match | Tournament outright | |
|---|---|---|
| Settles | When the series ends | When the event ends |
| What you need to know | Two teams, one veto, one patch | The whole field and bracket |
| Typical odds | Short to medium | Long, with a higher margin spread over many teams |
| Live options | Many in-play markets | Prices update between rounds of the bracket |
Glossary
Match betting terms
- Bo3
- Best-of-three: the first team to win two maps wins the match. So what: Map handicaps and totals are most common on Bo3 matches.
- Map handicap
- A head start of ±1.5 maps applied to the final series score. So what: Use it to back a favourite to win 2–0 or an underdog to take a map.
- Veto
- The pick-and-ban process that decides which maps are played. So what: The veto can turn an underdog into the favourite on a given map.
- Margin
- The bookmaker's built-in edge: the total implied probability above 100%. So what: Compare it across sites before you bet the same match.
Frequently asked questions
What types of bets can I place on a single esports match?
Match winner, map handicap, total maps, correct score, individual map winners and in-game markets such as first blood or total rounds. The range depends on the game and the bookmaker.
What does +1.5 maps mean?
In a best-of-three, a +1.5 map handicap wins if that team takes at least one map. −1.5 wins only if the team wins 2–0.
Which esports have the most single-match markets?
CS2, Dota 2, League of Legends and Valorant usually have the deepest markets. Smaller titles often have only match winner and handicap.
How does the series format affect the odds?
Longer series favour the stronger team. A 60% map favourite wins about 65% of Bo3 series and 68% of Bo5 series, so the match price is shorter than the map price.
How do I spot value in a match price?
Estimate the team's chance, convert it to fair odds with 1 / probability, and bet only if the available odds are longer than your fair odds.
How does live betting work on esports matches?
Odds update during the match after rounds, kills and objectives. Markets are suspended at key moments and bets may be delayed by a few seconds before they are accepted.
